SMU’s Growing National Reach

Published on August 23, 2026

Town & Country recently took a closer look at SMU’s rise, from a university historically known largely within Texas and the Sunbelt to one attracting significantly more attention across the country.

The article covers everything from SMU’s move to the ACC and the investment behind it to campus culture, athletics, and the university’s changing national reputation.

One number particularly stands out: first-year applications increased 56 percent.

SMU’s first seasons in the ACC have certainly helped. The Mustangs went 11-3 in their first ACC football season, reached the conference championship game, and earned a College Football Playoff berth. But the larger story goes beyond athletics.

As SMU alumna and D Magazine editor Caitlin Clark puts it in the article, SMU shares something with Dallas: it is a “very striving school.”

SMU has always had a strong presence in Dallas and Texas. Now, that recognition is expanding nationally, with more students applying and more attention on the university than in years past.

For alumni, SMU’s growing national profile expands the reach of the network. More recognition can lead to more connections, referrals, hires, and business opportunities across the alumni community.

That is part of what we are building at The 1911 Group: a stronger professional network that helps SMU alumni connect and do business with one another.
